United States Map Image. The second half of the 18th century wise saying marked transitions in American mapmaking - stimulated initially by the requirements of the British colonial administration and far ahead by those of the state government. First, there was a shift of beat from delineating outside boundaries to documenting internal geographic, cultural and embassy detail. In a second development, the job of United States Map Image was taken more than by professionals who introduced the ideal of a diagnostic regional survey conducted to uniform standards.
Prior to United States Map Image provided only the sketchiest view of the Massachusetts interior. all this tainted once the freshen of William Douglass' seminal "Plan of the British dominions of supplementary England in North America" (ca. 1753). Based on indigenous surveys, the plot was a staggering further more than earlier United States Map Image of the region.
Of primary importance was Douglass' integration of qualified surveys and recent administrative decisions to feat for the first times the hurriedly growing matrix of township boundaries as skillfully as many of the smaller lakes, rivers and streams. His United States Map Image is striking for its contrast between the densely arranged areas East of the Connecticut River and the relatively empty region to the West. "Plan of the British dominions" is plus the first to map proficiently Massachusetts' outside borders. In particular, he depicted the 1740 solution of a long-running boundary disagreement between Massachusetts and supplementary Hampshire.
